Montréal Pride festival is once again focusing on the importance of empowering persons from the female gender diversity within our communities, so they occupy the public stage and have their demands heard by placing them at the front of the August 19, 2018 Pride Parade that will run along René-Lévesque Boulevard, between Metcalfe and Alexandre-DeSève Streets. While other festivals claim difficulties in integrating artists from the female diversity to their programming, the 2018 edition of the Montréal Pride event will offer all of its festival goers a program with parity between artists identifying within the female diversity and those identifying with the male diversity.

“One persistent issue in all of our communities is the ability for all to speak and be heard and to advocate for their human rights and their freedom. This year, we wish to demonstrate our immense pride in all women, without exception, who have had the strength and courage to share their often-distressing stories. In honor of the over 17 million women who since 1998, notably through the #metoo movement, have denounced the injustices they have suffered and to honor those who will continue defending the feminist cause, the Montréal Pride festival is placing women at the forefront of its parade,” explains Éric Pineault, Founding President.

Importance of the Feminist Movement

The Montréal Pride festival reminds all that women still to this day suffer injustices and that the stereotypes and prejudices associated with the standards society imposes on them, have negative impacts on our society as a whole.  At a time when women notably struggle to obtain key positions at work, do not have access to proper education, are forced to compromise to balance work and family obligations, are told that sexual violence is not “real” violence and in a world where festivals state they cannot develop gender parity programming, it is high time that all the women of our communities be given a voice and be empowered and supported in their grievances.

Position Statement on Trans Women

The members of the festival’s Board of Directors, its management and employees take the opportunity to position themselves on the status of trans women in our society. In that respect, the Montréal Pride festival is calling on the population as well as on all the organisations that provide various types of services, to recognize and give consideration to the stated gender identity of all their interlocutors. Thus, a trans person, in transition or not, has the right to access the same services as the persons corresponding her stated gender. The Montréal Pride festival thus endorses the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms according to which identity or gender expression is a prohibited ground of discrimination. Consequently, it is with great pride that we will make the necessary efforts to ensure that ALL women, without exception, are represented front and center for our 2018 parade!

This year, the festivities will be held from August 9th to 19th. More info available on the web page, the Facebook page, as well as Twitter and Instagram accounts.
