Since its founding in July 2018, Gay and Grey Montréal has quickly established itself as an important voice for the city’s English-speaking 2SLGBTQI+ seniors. Barely a month after its creation, the organization took part in its very first Pride Parade. For many of its members, it was also the first time they had ever marched publicly as openly queer people, proud of who they are.
Over the years, Gay and Grey Montréal has become a familiar presence at Fierté Montréal Pride. Positioned among the first groups in the parade, the organization often helps lead the procession with its banner, members, and a few golf carts. This symbolic place reflects the recognition of the invaluable contributions LGBTQ+ seniors have made to the struggles that paved the way for today’s advances in equality, inclusion, and human rights.
For the organization, this visibility is essential. It serves as a reminder that the English-speaking 2SLGBTQI+ senior community is present, active, and engaged. It also shines a spotlight on those who fought for LGBTQ+ rights long before Pride celebrations grew into the large-scale events we know today.
Each year, the three minutes of silence observed during the parade hold special meaning for Gay and Grey Montréal’s members. They provide a moment of reflection to honour those who have passed away, particularly those lost during the HIV/AIDS crisis, and to remember the hardships endured by an entire generation so that the rights enjoyed by today’s LGBTQ+ community could be achieved.
Community Day is another highlight of the year. Gay and Grey Montréal uses the opportunity to showcase its programs, accomplishments, and future initiatives while welcoming visitors seeking information for themselves, a family member, or a friend. These conversations help strengthen a sense of belonging and underscore the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ seniors at every stage of life.
For Gay and Grey Montréal, participating in Pride celebrations remains one of the most meaningful moments of the year. It is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made, preserve the memory of past struggles, and affirm that queer seniors continue to hold an essential place within the community.
