In November, it really starts to get cold. Like, cold. The oversaturated colours of autumn begin to lose their pigmentation and give way to diverse variations of brown that sneakily announce winter. This gray month doesn’t even offer a festival or a long weekend to hold on to get through it more easily. To add to the gloom, November is nicknamed the month of the dead. In short, it’s not exactly exciting. Fret not, I have put together a perfect playlist to warm your hearts while you wait for the Christmas jingles. You know the drill, as usual, here’s a personal overview of the latest songs that stand out in the house and dance music scenes. As the name suggests, I picked here for you three of the hottest new releases and two hits that might have gone under your radar, to complete your FULL HOUSE.
Three Recent Songs to Discover
Jeannot Bournival – Mur à mur
On October 6, the artist from Saint-Élie-de-Caxton dropped a new version of his song Mur à mur, released in 2022 on the album Avec vue sur l’amer. Bournival teamed up with DJ Millimetrik to revisit the piece taken from his most recent album. While promising new material in early 2024, the musician first finished his previous chapter with this unexpected musical offering. Captivating and trance-inducing, this latest piece skillfully fuses the metaphorical poetry of the song’s original lyrics with a deep house approach. Winner of dozens of Félix and other awards in his career, Jeannot Bournival acts as a sound architect alongside artists such as Fred Pellerin, Tire le coyote and Bryan Perro in addition to his solo career. I say it often, Quebec artists who venture into house music do not receive enough recognition, in my opinion, so it is important to celebrate them and shed light on their work!!
Wuki – Sunshine (My Girl)
2023 has been a colossal year for Wuki that saw him release two of the most played DJ records in the world, Edge of Seventeen and To Be Real (ft. Cheryl Lynn). After knocking it out of the park twice, the American DJ came back at the end of August with yet another masterpiece. Sunshine (My Girl) is a flawless house flip of The Temptations’ 1965 hit, which will undeniably become his biggest release to date. The trackis already getting spun out by the world’s biggest DJs including, FISHER, Tchami, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, Oliver Heldens, Hardwell, Diplo, Tiësto, Don Diablo, Armin van Buuren, Chris Lake, Cedric Gervais, and more. Wuki, also known as Kris Barman, has now become one of the most talked about names in the global dance music scene. Once you’ve heard his new tune, you’ll put it on repeat for at least a good hour. You’re welcome!
HVMZA, Cheryl Zondi – Freed
HVMZA (pronounced Hamza) is a Belgian music producer and DJ with Turkish and Arabic roots. His music sits somewhere between Afro/Latin and Organic House with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern vibes, incorporating elements from a huge range of genres including Latin American Folk and traditional African music to create an engrossing and highly unique style. His music stands out due to his colourful background and the range of genres and cultures he brings to the table. Freshly released at the end of August, this new tune featuring South African singer Cheryl Zondi is no exception. Its chill vibe will put you in the perfect mood for a 5@7 with friends or a dinner with your other half. Santé !
Two Songs to Play Again
George Michael – Flawless (Go To The City)
This is a story I love. The disco song Keep on Dancin’ by Gary’s Gang was sampled by the dance group The Ones in 2001 to give birth to Flawless. The latter was in turn the subject of a sampling by none other than George Michael, in 2004, on his album Patience, to offer us the excellent Flawless (Go to the City). The production quality and the choice of instruments give the song a color that is still very current, so that you don’t notice that it’s almost twenty years old. Whether you’re a huge fan of this gay music icon or you simply want a good beat to dance to, search no more. I dare you to play it to your guests and I bet you they will ask you who performs this new hit.
Thomas Gold – Volare
Released in August, this hot tune revisits the 1989 hit by Spanish band Gipsy Kings. This bold move should come as no surprise since Berliner DJ Thomas Gold has made a name for himself by retouching Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, which is now boasting some 14 million and counting views on YouTube, as well as further remixes for Lady GaGa, Miike Snow, Fatboy Slim and various peers from across club land. This song is a big track. It’s a statement that you can’t just drop at any moment in a party. Play it when you want to make an impression. The happy swing that comes with the original Spanish song will guarantee a mood change if you want to wake your people up. 😊
